How SP Fits into NOAA
Special Projects (SP) is a support office for the National Ocean Service within NOAA. NOAA is a federal agency within the Department of Commerce. See the various organizational charts below to understand how SP fits into the bigger picture of federal government.
Department of Commerce (DOC)
NOAA is part of the DOC whose mission is to: create the conditions for economic growth and opportunity by promoting innovation, entrepreneurship, competitiveness, and stewardship.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
In determining its direction for the future, NOS follows the lead of its parent agency -- NOAA. NOAA conducts research and gathers data about the global oceans, atmosphere, space, and sun, and applies this knowledge to science and service that touch the lives of all Americans.
NOAA's National Ocean Service (NOS)
NOS is one of five offices of NOAA. NOS is a scientific and technical organization of more than 1,700 individuals whose mission is to preserve and enhance the nations coastal resources and ecosystems along 95,000 miles of shoreline and 3.5 million square miles of coastal ocean. At the same time, it works to support economic growth for the long-term benefit of the nation. NOS is composed of ten program and staff offices.
NOS Management and Budget Office (M&B)
The NOS Mananagement and Budget Office is the focal point for all planning, management, budget, internal and external communication, and education activities at NOS Headquarters. In this role, MB supports the NOS Assistant Administrator and nine program offices and staff offices. The Special Projects division is in the NOS Management and Budget Office.
Special Projects (SP)
SP is comprised of administration and two branches with approximately 30 employees (including both federal employees and contractors).
