Special Projects (SP) provides technical and operational support on the design, development and implementation of dynamic Web applications and databases using ASP.NET programming, SQL Server database technology. SP specializes in the development of information retrieval and Web services to deliver “right-sized” solutions.
|
Services Include:
- Identifying Systems Requirements
SP works closely with clients to capture, evaluate, assess, prototype and document user and systems requirements to deliver custom Web services and solutions.
- Database Design, Development, and Implementation
SP follows several steps to effectively store, disseminate, and analyze data within a database system. These steps include: collecting and analyzing information; developing conceptual and logical data models; defining the table structure and relationships between data tables; and, designing the database and user interface.
- Dynamic Web Application Design and Web Enabled Databases
Building Web pages making use of a variety of program technologies (e.g. ASP.NET, ASP, Java, Javascript, SAS, etc.) that show real-time information from database management and information systems. These pages can show data reports and summaries or allow users to design their own searches. Results can be shown as tables, maps, or summary statistics displayed as charts and graphs.
Dynamic Web applications are built in a two-tier Web development and production environment and undergo a technical peer review and security review to ensure completeness and compliance to DOC/NOAA IT standards.

- Web Hosting and Administration
Providing Web hosting services and system administration of over 100 National Ocean Service and partner Web sites for the public. Through such consolidation, offices and programs can concentrate on developing and maintaining their Web content, rather than worrying about the underlying infrastructure required to deliver the content.
- Web Analysis and Metrics
Creating and maintaining a vast library of Web metrics on all NOS Web sites, in both statistical and visual formats, allowing usage trends to be tracked over time. Trend information helps validate Web design through analysis of successful and unsuccessful Web transactions.
Technical Skills Include:
- Database Management Systems: SQL, Oracle, SAS, Access, and Filemaker
- Programming and other Web technologies: ASP.NET, ASP, JSP, Java, Javascript, HTML/CGI, J2EE, XML, Lasso, and Cold Fusion
- A wide range of non-Web and Web based software programs: Visual Studio, Enterprise Manager, Crystal Reports, Dreamweaver, Microsoft Products, etc.
- Data visualization tools: ArcGIS, ArcIMS, Arc Objects, Python, Oracle Spatial, and FME
- FGDC metadata and Web hosting
