Special Projects (SP) provides partners with a wide spectrum of spatial analysis and remote sensing support, ranging from producing display maps that graphically illustrate the status or condition of a marine resource or issue, to conducting sophisticated spatial analysis, to building Web-based interactive mapping sites that allow users to view, manipulate, and download spatial data via the Internet.

Services Include:
- GIS and Remote Sensing Applications
Assisting with numerous GIS and remote sensing applications including: the environment, natural hazard management, and natural resource management.
- Spatial Analysis and Data Modeling
Integrating geographic and statistical techniques in support of socioeconomic and environmental projects.
- GIS Development and Outreach
As a leader in GIS technology within NOS, SP provides support to other offices, hosts GIS learning seminars, and creates opportunities to strengthen the GIS community within NOAA.
- Metadata Development, Training, and Outreach
Metadata is an essential part of any spatial product, but one that is often overlooked. In partnership with the NOS CIO's office, SP provides training and one-on-one assistance to help NOAA staff create metadata for their products in order to comply with FGDC and other standards.
- Web-based GIS Development
Designing and managing Web-based mapping solutions for groups within NOS. SP provides groups with a method to display and deliver spatial data to their users, as well as to reach new audiences.
- 3D Data Visualization
Providing technical expertise, and hardware and software solutions to aid in the editing, analysis, and visualization of multi-dimensional data sets.
